Handling of textiles in the circular economy - Lunch briefing

Welcome to this lunch discussion on how to reach a resource efficient system for textile materials in Europe. Sustainability, with its economic, environmental and social dimensions, is a challenge in the textile and clothing industry. The vision of operating according to a globalised and efficient circular economic model that maximizes the use of resources requires focus and technology development. The strive towards a circular economy is an important issue in the European Textile and Clothing Industry which holds great potential for many industrial sectors, economical as well as environmental and social. However, a number of challenges must be overcome. There is a need to reach an efficient recycling of textile materials which requires developments in the following areas: • Improved collection rate • New technologies for sorting of post-consumer textile • Development of recycling technologies, mechanical as well as chemical • Identification of relevant application areas for sorted, non-reuse, fractions • Systems for quality control, control of chemical content and grading systems for recycled raw materials to enable easier and safer access for producers. We are pleased to welcome you to discuss with textile sector experts how to ensure the realization of a resource efficient European model for textiles.
